The Perfect Time to Aerate and Overseed Your Lawn

September is one of the best times to aerate and overseed turfgrass in Nebraska. Cooler nighttime temperatures and warm soil create ideal conditions for seed germination and root development, giving new grass time to establish before winter.

Aeration and overseeding are two of the most effective ways to improve the health and appearance of your lawn. Aeration relieves soil compaction and creates openings that allow water, oxygen and nutrients to reach the root zone. Overseeding introduces new grass into thin or bare areas, helping create a thicker, healthier lawn.

Even if your lawn already looks good, aerating and overseeding can strengthen the turf and improve its ability to handle heat, drought, disease and other stresses.

Improve Your Soil While You Aerate

Immediately after aerating and overseeding is also a great time to improve your soil. Applying compost and gypsum after aeration allows these materials to work their way into the openings created throughout the lawn.

We recommend pelletized compost products as an easy way to add organic matter, natural fertilizer, minerals and beneficial fungi to the soil. Building healthier soil supports stronger roots and healthier turf over the long term.

How Much Grass Seed Do You Need?

For most lawns, we recommend overseeding at a rate of 3 to 8 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet, depending on the condition of your turf.

An average 6,500-square-foot residential lawn would need approximately 20 pounds of seed at the lower seeding rate.

If your lawn is thin or has a lot of bare areas, increase the rate to around 8 pounds per 1,000 square feet, or approximately 52 pounds of seed for a 6,500-square-foot lawn.
